Virtual Vacation, Pt. II

Still dreaming of Florence...

Fun facts about the city:
Modern Italian is considered the direct descendant of fiorentino, the Tuscan dialect spoken in Florence. The symbol of Florence is the fleur de lis, the French lily, and in fact, the great cathedral of Florence, Santa Maria della Fiore, means "Saint Mary of the flowers" (in this case, the lilies).

Florence was home to Dante, Boccaccio, Michelangelo, the Medici, Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Machiavelli, Galileo, and Florence Nightingale. (Betcha didn't know about that last one -- she was born in the city, hence her given name.)

No stay in Florence would be complete without a visit to the Uffizi Gallery (click to see some gorgeous pop-up art) or the Palazzo Medici, home of Lorenzo the Magnificent.

I'm first generation Italian Canadian and have been to Italy several times. But never have I been to Florence. I've heard so many wonderful things that I will definitely be going there on my next trip. I'm working on a novel in the Monteaperti hills near Sienna, so it will be a working holiday.

Thanks for the lovely pictures.

Jen McG:

I catch up with this blog from time to time and it made me laugh when I looked at it today and read this post. I can hear the bells of Giotto's campanile ringing at this very moment, and if I stepped out onto my terrace I would be able to see them in action since the Duomo is just next to where I'm staying! I was in the Uffizi just a few hours ago, and a few hours from now I'll be in a restaurant that claims to occupy what used to be Donatello's workshop.

So, greetings from Florence and from one of your readers!

Jen,

You lucky dog! That's just wonderful! Please enjoy it for all of us!
