What I'm Working on Now

A book about Catherine de' Medici, actually. The U.S. title will be THE BLOODIEST QUEEN, and the U.K. title will be THE MEDICI QUEEN. (Understandably, "bloody" plus "queen" just really doesn't go over well in Britain...)

The great-granddaughter of Lorenzo the Magnificent, Catherine became Queen of France through marriage. For centuries, she has been blamed for the horrific St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, in which scores of thousands of French Protestants were slaughtered. Me, I'm thinkin' she got a bum rap.

Catherine was far from the cold, ruthless murderess some historians have labeled her. She was a charming, warm individual, a loyal wife and mother, and probably the most competent monarch France ever knew. She was also an indisputably brilliant mathematician; during her dangerous childhood, she became fascinated by astrology and astrological magic, and learned to cast charts. After she became queen, she befriended Nostradamus (yup, he was French) and consulted him at least three times on important matters; ultimately, she bestowed upon him the title of Physician of the Realm.

Catherine lived during interesting times: the Late Renaissance, the Reformation and the French religious wars. She was a contemporary of Elizabeth I, and foster mother (and later, mother-in-law) to Mary, Queen of Scots.

In THE BLOODIEST QUEEN, I examine Catherine's attraction to astrology and the dark arts, as well as the political, religious and personal forces that converged to bring about the terrible massacre.

Hurry! I cannot wait for the next book!

Jeanne,

Fell in love with Catherine's story when I read, so many years ago, Jean Plaidy's trilogy.

I loved "Borgia Bride", and now look forward to "The Bloddiest Queen".

Which title will it be known by down here in OZ??

~~~ Melisende
Thanks for the kind comments, Melisende. It'll be known in the UK/Australia as THE MEDICI QUEEN.
