My Favorite. Vampire. Novel. Ever.*

Suzy McKee Charnas' THE VAMPIRE TAPESTRY.

Suzy is a Hugo- and Nebula-award-winning author, and THE VAMPIRE TAPESTRY is a shining example of her elegant, lovely prose. When I first began to write, I studied TVP so that perhaps, some day, I might grow up to write like her. Trust me, and buy it.

Suzy is one of my writing idols. I met her at a Dracula convention once, and she was enormously gracious to me, even though I was reduced to a nervous, stuttering ball of hero worship. I've discovered she has a website and blog. Visit, and let her know who sent ya.

*Yes, I mean it. Even more than DRACULA.

Hi, Jeanne --

Wow, that was a while ago -- why don't we just proclaim it "Dracula's Birthday" and have another party? That con was great -- all those people in black corsets, and the guy playing the theramin! Super. Fond memories.

Thanks for the kind words -- "Tapestry" is going out of print in its current edition this coming August, alas, BUT Patrick Nielsen Hayden at Tor assures me that he wants to reprint it in the Orb line of SF/F classics. So, can't complain, much, not in this publishing milieu which, frankly, sucks hugely.

Still, onward and upward, and whenever you get a chance, give a boost to a colleague -- as you have just so kindly done. Classy, kid. Keep up the good work!

Best, Suzy

Do love your way with words - stuttering ball of hero worship. I must steal that.

John Allen:

While I have to give props to Jeanne and her wonderful vampiric work, my favorite vampire novel of ALL time goes to VAMPIRES ANONYMOUS by Jeffrey N. McMahan. Talk about guilty pleasure! WHEW!
